Gary Cahill was signed on loan from Aston Villa in November 2004 by former gaffer,Steve Cotterill and immediately became a firm favourite with Clarets fans putting in some impressive performances in the back four. Despite being only 19 at the time, he had a cool head and under the wing of John McGreal in particular developed immensely. He played 27 games for the Clarets, even managing to score a goal. That season he was named both Burnley’s Player Of The Year and Young Player Of The Year and all Clarets fans were sad to see him him go back to Villa at the end of the 2004-5 season.

There were rumours going around at the time that we might be in with a chance of signing him permanently from Aston Villa but realistically if there was any genuine interest it is likely that they wouldn’t have been able to afford him.

In September, 2007, Cahill joined Sheffield United on a three month loan deal returning to Villa Park in mid December 2007.

At the end of January 2008 though Gary Cahill signed for Bolton Wanderers on a three-and-a-half year deal after speculation that a number of clubs were interested in signing the player including local Villa rivals,Birmingham City and Turkish club Beşiktaş J.K.

The former England U20 and U21 defender, now 23 is widely tipped to be a future full England International and has become a firm favourite at the Reebok.

News today is that Arsenal have been having the player watched and could be ready to make a bid in this summer’s transfer window.

Wanderers gaffer,Gary Megson rates the player highly, so much so has has put a £20m price tag on him in an attempt to scare off Arsenal saying:

‘I think he`s the best young centre-half in the country by an absolute street’

Oh to have money!
