Joey Barton’s return to training with Burnley was confirmed by Sean Dyche recently. However, the Clarets’ Player of the Year last season wasn’t training with the first team he’s just been keeping his fitness up.

The 34-year-old former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder is of course a free agent following his exit from Rangers in November after his contract was mutually cancelled.

Explaining the current situation Sean Dyche was quoted by the BBC as saying.

‘I said last week if he needed us and wanted to come in he’d be more than welcome, which he is – he’s been training with us for a number of days now. He’s not with the first team, he’s doing background fitness work with the sports science team. That’s an ongoing thing until things change in the future. He’s just enjoying being back in and getting himself fit. He was generally fit of course but he’s just topping up.’

Dyche isn’t ruling out a return in the New Year though but for the time being he’s just allowing the Barton to work on his fitness then we’ll see what happens.

The boss added.

‘He’d had an indifferent time with being away from the club and different things going on in Scotland, so it’s about getting him fit and sharp. That’s good for him, who knows about us? We’ll take that on when I see fit.’

Barton’s since been announced as rejoining the first team squads WhatsApp group with this further adding to speculation he could be close to a Turf Moor return?
