Joey Barton, never a man who is short of a view (or opinion) or two in this, that and the other has claimed he was targeted by former England boss Steve McClaren in each of his last two jobs?

Barton has previous with Newcastle and they (at least McClaren) wanted to sign him last summer before his move to Burnley.

The midfielder was also wanted by him at Derby too when a QPR player?

As we’ve said before Barton most definitely arrived as someone who ‘divided opinions’ at Turf Moor ahead of his signing by Sean Dyche but his Player of the Year award proves testament to the impact he’s had on (and off, to be fair) the field for Burnley this season.

Regarding his claims he told TalkSPORT.

‘Steve wanted to sign me at Derby, because he knew I was out of contract at QPR. He obviously lost his job at Derby, and wanted to sign me for Newcastle. I spoke to him a few times over the summer, and he was told, basically, the Pope had more chance of playing for Newcastle than me.’

Newcastle’s loss (who he played for previously before his release by the Toon with him then moving onto QPR) was our gain wasn’t it!
