Midfielder Joey Barton was delighted to see Burnley secure their automatic spot back to the Premier League this year, but far from celebrating he now wants to get his hands on the Championship title itself.

Having been mobbed on the Turf Moor pitch along with the other players in Monday’s victory over Queens Park Rangers that secured the top flight return at the first time of asking, a pleased Barton told the Official Site that he still wanted more.

‘We`ve got to enjoy the achievement to get the club to bounce back at the first attempt which statistics are against. My belief is always aim small, miss small and I want to win the league. I hope that`s affected the other lads over the season because it`s all I`ve been talking about! I think with the run we`ve been on we have earned the right to be champions. I was speaking to the lads before the game and I said ‘Can you remember who finished second in the Olympic final last year?` and they couldn`t but everyone remembers Bolt. We need to go and win the league. That`s what it`s about and there is nothing else that interests me. I was fortunate to be part of a squad that won it at Newcastle and a promotion at QPR. Hopefully we can go and get the job done on Saturday.’

With a 22 game unbeaten run already ours, if we can make that 23 and take the Championship title against Charlton this weekend, it would be Burnley’s post war record for an unbeaten run – and that’s obviously also something Barton wants to be a part of.

‘We`ve got to go again and I`m not sure we were at our best today but we got the job done. There is still something to play for and that`s Charlton on Saturday. 30 or 40 years down the line, your kids and theirs will be able to say ‘my dad was a part of that side` and it doesn`t say who the runners-up were on the trophy. It`s important to be a part of history.’
