Midfielder Joey Barton has scooped the fans’ Player of the Year award for his performances in 2015/16.

Having joined from Queens Park Rangers over the summer, Barton has been key to our automatic promotion and Championship title win this year, and he was suitably acknowledged by the fans in their vote for player of the year in Monday evening’s celebration at Turf Moor – that also saw the club lift the Championship trophy and celebrate with the civic reception.

Other winners on the night included Ben Mee, Andre Gray and Scott Arfield in the campaign that saw us go 23 unbeaten with 20 clean sheets to boot.

Mee took Players’ Player of the Year, whilst Arfield got Goal of the Season for his strike in the game against Blackburn Rovers and Gray obviously took top goalscorer for the campaign.

Legend Michael Duff also announced his retirement on the day and announced he would stay with the club, taking up a coaching role in our Academy.

Dean Marney was acknowledged for his 200 appearances, whilst Dave Jones was for his 100 – as did skipper Tom Heaton – the milestones in the league being achieved during the campaign.

Tommy Wood took Youth Team Player of the Year.

Speaking to the Official Site after picking up his award, Barton couldn’t have been more thrilled, but he was quick to credit the efforts of his colleagues.

‘This is the greatest group of humans beings I`ve ever been involved with. Personally, I`ve just done what I`ve done but Ben Mee – outstanding, Tom Heaton – different class and one of the best captains I`ve played with, Andre Gray – 24 goals, 9 assists. I don`t deserve this because it`s about the collective of people. It`s not about me and I`d go through brick walls for every single one of them. I could be here all night but my voice has gone from singing the Alouette but seriously, thank you to you all.’

There was also an administrative error in the number of medals for the civic parade – the players picked up their missing medals – namely James Tarkowski and Joey Barton – this morning.
