Burnley had recently confirmed Joey Barton would be signing a contract with the club in the New Year that would take him through until the end of the season.

However, a recent charge was brought against him for allegedly making well over 1,000 bets over a period of 10 years – something that rules prohibit those involved in football from making.

Following this FA charge Burnley had released this statement on the Official Website a few days ago.

‘Burnley Football Club have today been made aware of FA charges brought against Joey Barton relating to historic betting on football matches. The club will be discussing the matter with Joey and his legal representatives and will be making no further comment on the matter at this time.’

Barton had been training with Burnley since his release by Rangers and was set – he could still – for a return to Turf Moor in the coming days but this return will almost certainly be put on hold until he responds to this charge. He has until 5th January 2017 to do so.

Commenting after the crucial 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Boxing Day Sean Dyche confirmed Barton will continue to train with Burnley while this situation is resolved.

The boss was quoted by Sky Sports as saying.

‘I believe so. I don’t think there is a rule about carrying on training unless someone tells me otherwise. Of course (Barton will still train with Burnley). This does not change my thinking on him on, who he is and what he’s done for me. He’s not actually a contracted player of ours, he’s not registered with us. The FA will be dealing with Joey direct. We’ve had a chat with him direct and we had agreed some ideas in principle, but this is something between him and the FA. As they club said, they will speak with the relevant people as and when they need to.’
