Our former gaffer and new Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill looks set to make former Clarets centre-back and captain Steven Caldwell his first signing.

Caldwell started his professional career with Newcastle United in 1998 and following loan spells at Blackpool, Bradford (2 stints) and Leeds signed for local arch rivals Sunderland after being released in 2004.

It was Cotterill who first signed Caldwell for the Clarets back in January 2007. Our former gaffer paid Sunderland an initial £200,000 for his services (£200,000 more paid later) with the defender penning a three-and-a-half year deal at Turf Moor.

The Scottish international though, now 29 was released this summer by Brian Laws.

With Steve Cotterill now back in the Championship with Portsmouth after being announced as their new manager last week, it is bound to raise speculation that the former Notts County gaffer could be in line to sign a number of his former Clarets players.Clarets fans will be watching his moves with interest although funds are likely to be limited at the financially-stricken club following administration last season.
