34 year old Leon Cort is one of nine players to be released by Charlton Athletic. Cort of course used to ply his trade with Burnley. The Stoke City defender came to Turf Moor in January 2010 for £1.5 million after signing a three-and-a-half-year deal. At the time, Burnley were playing their first season in the top flight for 33 years but had just lost their charismatic gaffer, Owen Coyle with Brian Laws now at the helm. It would not prove a successful move and he could not help his side avoid relegation back to the Championship. Cort found opportunities in the second tier limited and loans at Preston and Charlton Athletic followed. The Guyana international signed a permanent deal with the Addicks in January 2012 after making just 19 first team appearances for the Clarets. His career began to take off again after helping the League One side gain promotion back to the Championship and his contract was extended by a year in May 2013. He now leaves ‘The Valley’ though having notched up 33 appearances for the Addicks.
