Six of our players will be dreading picking up a yellow card should they play in the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Turf Moor this Saturday.

An FA amnesty is in place for any player who picks up their fifth yellow of the season after the end of February but we play the Owls on the last day of the month before the amnesty kicks in.

A fifth yellow in Saturday’s game would mean an automatic one match ban and the game they would miss would be the high-profile match against Arsenal at the Emirates in the FA Cup 5th Round on Sunday March 8th

We currently have six players sweating on four yellows and we certainly would want all of them available for the FA Cup clash so we shall have to hope Duff, McDonald, Gudjonsson, Eagles, Paterson and Thompson all avoid the wrath of the referee this Saturday.

The problem for the Clarets is that the referee will be Andy D’Urso. The Essex official has refereed 29 games this season and dished out 49 yellow cards and 4 reds! In two games, six yellows were in his book!

We have had our fair share of poor referees this season and although we are not a dirty side by any standards the disciplinary table seems to tell it’s own story

This link shows you the Football League table of bookings and offences for this season in the Championship

Championship Club Discipline Table 2008-9

The Clarets are quite high up and the 8th worst offenders on paper with a total of 420 fouls leading to 6 penalties, 53 yellow cards and 5 red cards so far this season.

Strange, I thought we might be higher somehow and we certainly need to try and avoid any more bookings in the light of previous fines for bad discipline. I have to say though, a lot of the decisions by the referees have been atrocious this season and there certainly doesn’t appear to be any consistency. I suppose the only thing that is fair is that all the teams in the Championship will suffer in time the same poor referees with an equal chance of poor decisions so maybe it evens itself out eventually. Maybe we just seem to get awful referees all the time, especially at Turf Moor?
