Clarets fans will be aware that next season we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our 1959/60 Division 1 Title, the last time we won the title in the top flight.

The club have already revealed that the new strip for next season will be based on the kit worn back in those halcyon days.

However Vital Burnley can now exclusively reveal some further plans regarding the club’s intentions to celebrate this important anniversary.

The Club have announced there will be a pre-season friendly against Everton, the first club we played at Turf Moor in the 1959/60 season and the first bit of great news is that the tickets for the friendly will be based on the 1959/60 Season prices . The matchday programme will be a replica of the one used back then. It will also only cost 3d (old pence) and you will be able to exchange your money for the old coinage at special kiosks around the ground.

The players in both teams in this friendly will also line up in the 2:3:5 formation and all the Clarets players will have the names of the players from the 1959/60 season on their back.

Brian Jensen will sport the name of Adam Blacklaw whilst Graham Alexander will be John Angus for the day with Stephen Jordan taking on the role of Alex Elder and so on throughout the team.

The team shirts will be numbered 1-11 and of course there will be no substitutes.

Christian Kalvenes reminds a lot of Clarets of blonde bombshell Ray Pointer, so he will line up as centre forward.

But the great news is that Burnley legend, Jimmy McIlroy will lead out the team and will play the first 5 minutes. Jimmy who has kept remarkably fit for his age is understood to be looking forward to this opportunity once more to play on the hallowed Turf but this time using a modern ball.

Jimmy Mac recently said “I regret I never played on the surfaces that they have nowadays, and I never kicked the ball they play with because it`s so light and it bounces so high”

Many Clarets fans of a certain age will be keen to see how the advancing years have affected his ball skills and of course it will give many younger Clarets fans a chance to see what all the fuss was about and why Jimmy is generally recognised as the best ever Burnley player to put on a Claret & Blue shirt.

After 5 minutes of play one of our current players will take over Jimmy Mac’s shirt and we can now also reveal that all the Clarets websites have been approached by the club to suggest which of our current squad could fill the role of Burnley legend, Jimmy McIlroy. We are therefore asking all our posters to suggest a player in the comments section below this article so we can relay this back to the club. If you wish to remain anonymous with your selection you can also email the site on burnley@vitalfootball.co.uk

The player in our current squad who gets the most votes will be announced on the Official Website at the end of the season.
