Chelsea Changed Burnley’s Story

Manager Sean Dyche has been previewing this evening’s clash with Chelsea at Turf Moor and he feels we can go into the game with no fear as the reverse tie changed Burnley’s story this season.

Our trip to Stamford Bridge back in August saw us take a 3-2 victory with Sam Vokes scoring twice on the day and an effort from Stephen Ward. With a 3-0 lead at the halftime break, it was obviously disappointing to lose the two goals in the second half but we held on for the victory to register our first away win of the campaign.

That was obviously huge for Burnley, especially as the game opened the 2017/18 campaign for us, but starting in that manner and picking up the vital away win following the previous season was a huge boost to everyone.

Dyche told the Official Site that ultimately the club hadn’t looked back since as we close in on an unexpected potential European journey next term.

“Looking back on that game, it wasn’t just a great result against a top side. You’ve got to remember there was a story to the season before about one win away from home. That was gone immediately. And you’ve won. Apart from the real superpowers, everyone waits for that first win and it makes a story if you don’t get that first win in a number of games.”

Having started the season in that manner Burnley went on to lose only two of our opening 12 games and we were beaten just once in seven away games.

Dyche felt that helped change our entire outlook on the season given the boost the players took from it and once we hit the ground running, we haven’t really stopped since – the down point to the season was our 11 game winless run either side of the New Year, but that was only disappointing based on how we’d been gaining results, we were still picking up points afterall.

We are now on a run of five straight victories and unbeaten in the last six as we close in on Arsenal from seventh place and the gaffer said there was certainly a fresh spring in the step of everyone at the training ground, but with high hopes for the year now from fans his focus remains one game at a time and we see where it takes us.

“It gives you that little lift and everything feels a bit better, everyone feels a bit better about themselves. The crowd are buzzing, the team are buzzing and does instil that extra bit of confidence and the freedom to go and play. You’ve got to enjoy that feeling because it’s hard to come by in the Premier League and we’ve done that successfully on a number of occasions this season.”

With Dyche confirming that Ben Mee and Scott Arfield would again be missing tonight it’s simply a case of over to others to continue to impress.

For the fans, the closer we get the more body parts we’ll cross but Chelsea won’t be walkovers. Whatever happens, it won’t define the season either as this is already beyond what most would’ve imagined.
