Steve Cotterill has revealed that he was contacted about Reading leading scorer Kevin Doyle before he joined the Royals from Cork City in the summer of 2005.

He is quoted as saying on The Citizen Lancashire website

‘We didn’t have the money, even as small as it was at the time, to get Doyle,’ he said.

I spoke to the Shelbourne manager, who I knew from my time in Sligo, and he said that they (Doyle and Reading team-mate Shane Long) were coming over.

‘But at the time we didn’t have the money to go and get anyone. We wouldn’t have had more than £80,000 to go and get him.We don’t have that money to go and speculate on people.

‘Those people need to definitely play and come into our team.To be fair to him he’s come over here and done well.I’ve managed in the League of Ireland so any of the boys who come over from over there, they deserve everything they get.

‘And good luck to the two boys who are over here, and I mean that. It’s hard work in that League of Ireland, believe me.If any of them come over here and get their rewards from working hard I absolutely take my hat off to them.’

We all know how well Doyle has performed for Reading but his team mate, Shane Long also showed his capabilities in our FA Cup match with Reading on Tuesday night duly scoring against the Clarets in their 3-2 victory.

It does make you wonder if we would have bought one if not both players had the new Director, Brendan Flood been on the scene back then.
