Burnley have announced their fourth summer signing, with Crewe defender Steve Foster signing on at Turf Moor on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old was out of contract at Gresty Road and joins the Clarets new signings Alan Mahon and Andy Gray, and also links up with former Alex striker Steve Jones.

Manager Steve Cotterill said: ‘With Duane Courtney on the transfer list we are down to five defenders and if two of them were to get injured we have a problem.

‘I have been looking around to try to find a right back. I have been to Spain and I’ve been to Germany, watching something like six games to try to identify a right back we could do something with.

‘All to no avail because they are no better than I’ve already got. Therefore, we have had to go down the route of another central defender to be able to shuffle our back four around a little.

‘Stephen is a free transfer, but more than that he’s a proven defender and a good lad with excellent character and I really think he will do well for us.

‘I always think that whenever we played Crewe, he was arguably their best defender so we are delighted with both of the boys we have got from Crewe and we look forward to working with them both.’
