‘Owd Ginge’ was involved in an horrendous clash of heads with Baggies defender, McShane last night. He was stretchered off unconscious and spent the night in hospital as a precaution after coming round in the club’s medical room.

The incident happened in the 45th minute and also saw Albion defender Paul McShane red-carded. This was clearly the wrong decision though; it was obvious from the Sky cameras that the Baggies defender was going for the ball not the man and hopefully the accident will be seen during his appeal and the red card will be rescinded.

The former Albion player affectionally nicknamed ‘The Wasp’ by the Baggies fans was out cold as he fell to the ground.

He was given oxygen after being stretchered off and thankfully he quickly regained consciousness

The gaffer confirmed he would hopefully be alright

‘James was out for two to three minutes and hopefully he will be okay. He is in hospital and they will keep him in overnight for observation.’

Steve Cotterill also said he would be happy to back any appeal against the sending off if the cameras supported the view.

He said: ‘All I can see is a challenge and we are not going to be throwing any accusations around.

‘From what I hear it shouldn’t be a sending off, but I do know Paul (McShane) and he is a very honest, committed player.

‘I think his honesty says he didn’t deserve to be sent off and if West Brom want to appeal, we will look at it and back their appeal if that’s the case.’
