Daniel Lafferty has been called into the provisional Northern Ireland squad, and Burnley have activated the clause they held on George Green.

Defender Lafferty has been named in the Northern Ireland squad for their friendly against Belarus at Windsor Park on Friday May 27, and then the provisional 28 man squad will be whittled down to 23 on Saturday May 28 ahead of their European Championship campaign this summer.

Michael O’Neill explained.

‘We will use the Belarus game to look at our options, our systems and how we play. It’s also a chance to look at personnel and to give players opportunities. We are on a good run at the minute and we want to continue that run. It is important that we approach the match in the same way as we have approached all our other games since qualification. In those we are unbeaten. We have won two and drawn one. We have only conceded one goal and that was from a penalty. Those are little things that build confidence and momentum going into a tournament.’

As for 20 year old Green, he joined the club in January on a short term deal, but Burnley did have a 12 month option in that deal, and having performed well and scored five times for the Development Squad, the club have now activated that option on the forward.

Senior Professional Development Phase coach Michael Jolley told the Official Site.

‘George has thoroughly deserved his new deal to remain at Burnley as he has adapted well to our environment. There is no doubting the quality that George`s got and we treat people how we find them, and he is a player that has impressed us in his time here. He is a player with great potential and next season is going to be a big year for him. There are a few different options now for him; go on to catch the eye of the manager, continue to impress in our ever developing group and then there`s also the option of him to go out on loan and experience some first team football. It`s great to keep George at the club, and hopefully he can now go onto fulfil his undoubted potential.’
