Local boy, Jay Rodriguez has started to break into the first team in recent games and has already scored a couple of goals this season including his first away goal in Saturday`s 1-1 draw at Millwall. Remarkably all his previous six goals were scored in front of the Jimmy Mac stand and the goals Clarets fans will remember the most will be those scored in our Carling Cup run during our promotion season. Rodriguez scored a late winner against Fulham in the Carling Cup third round before later scoring in the semi-final second leg against Spurs.

Rodriguez made his debut from the bench in a 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City in December 2007 and he has had to be patient since that time trying to establish himself in the first team.

He has though made four consecutive starts recently and has clearly made an impression.

Brian Laws is keen to offer the 21 year old striker a new improved deal. Rodriguez is in the last year of his current contract and the club are clearly keen to hold onto to his services.

‘We are mindful that he is coming out of contract,’ said Laws.

‘We spoke to him weeks ago about improving his contract.

‘I said once we got this international break out of the way we will sit down with his agent and hopefully progress something with him because we want to keep him.

‘He is young, he is a local boy and he loves the place. He’s not going anywhere!’
