Burnley midfielder Alan Mahon beleives the club can mount a promotion challenge, following the example of his former club Wigan Athletic.

Another promotion for Mahon would make it a hat-trick at this level, as he looks for his chance to make an impact at the top level, following limited opportunities with the Latics and Blackburn.

He said: ‘I’ve been fortunate enough to get promotion from this league with Blackburn and Wigan and it would be amazing to achieve that for a third time with Burnley.

‘I can’t see why not because we have the same sort of nucleus of players as we had at Wigan, where quite a lot of players came through from the lower leagues.

‘The manager there, Paul Jewell, didn’t spend a lot other than signing Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington, but with the work ethic he instilled into the lads and the team bonding, that was all the catalyst they needed.’
