‘We were on a hiding to nothing’ said Steve Cotterill after the Clarets eventually beat Grimsby on penalties at Blundell Park last night

‘You don’t get any credit for winning but I suppose you get a little bit of stick if you get beat.

‘We have made those nine changes and in the second half it livened up. In the second half I thought we could have won it within 20 to 25 minutes and then at the death they could and should have won it.

‘All in all I thought it was a fair result and the only surprise with the penalties is that we missed one!’

Cotterill commenting on the penalty save by Jensen said: ‘Brian made a couple of good saves and the last time he did that in a penalty shoot out we went and had a good run, so maybe that will continue.’

In conclusion the gaffer said ‘For me it was Grimsby’s night. They played some great football and made it very difficult for us and we are grateful to be in the next round because night’s like this are tailor made for a cup exit.’

Yep, time to forget this match and just be happy we are still in the hat. Not sure the Carling Cup interests enough clubs or fans these days but at least 371 Clarets ventured out down to Cleethorpes to watch the game!
