Burnley take on League Two York City at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday night in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The Pre-amble:

The Clarets take a break already from their new Championship campaign which only kicked-off last Saturday at home to Bolton. They now visit Bootham Crescent to play York City in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night hoping to avoid any banana skins against the League Two side and progress to the second round. It is probably important for morale and confidence that we don`t slip up against lower league opposition and put together an impressive performance ahead of our next Championship game away to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Our opener against Bolton ended in a 1-1 draw but it was generally recognised as a good performance from the Clarets and an entertaining game.

Nigel Worthington`s men opened their League Two campaign on Saturday with a win. Striker Ryan Jarvis scored on his league debut to hand York a 1-0 victory over 10-man Northampton.

We might not be coming in our thousands this time and we certainly won`t be returning as Champions although it would be champion if we progressed convincingly to round two of this competition without any hiccoughs!

York City Team News:

York are hoping former Burnley striker Wes Fletcher recovers from an ankle injury to make his debut against the side he signed from this summer. Defender Ben Davies misses out because his parent club, Preston North End have not permitted him to play.

Player to watch: Ryan Jarvis

Well i was tempted to say Wes Fletcher but he is an injury doubt so I will go with new boy, Ryan Jarvis mentioned above. Jarvis turned down a new contract with Torquay to sign for League Two rivals York City on a two-year contract in May 2013 and has already opened his account for the Minstermen on his debut last Saturday against Aidy Boothroyd`s Northampton. The former Norwich City striker has represented England at U16, U17 and U19 level having also played for Leyton Orient and Walsall in addition to a number of clubs on loan.

Burnley Team News:

The only injury concerns at the moment appear to be Ben Mee and Michael Duff. Both have missed a few of the pre-season friendlies and the opening Championship game at home to Bolton. It remains to be seen if they have recovered enough to be in contention for the York clash.

Player to watch: David Jones

So what will be in Davy Jones locker? Our new midfielder just gets on with it without any dramas but he has looked effective and influential already in pre-season and against Bolton last Saturday. He could be key against York City and could present quite a few problems for the League Two side.

Team & Tactics:

This could be an ideal opportunity for Sean Dyche to rotate some of his squad although numbers are still somewhat low. It is quite possible Sean Dyche might be tempted to keep with the same eighteen but maybe promote some of those on the bench last Saturday to the starting eleven.

I would expect to see some of the fringe players in contention for this game but it`s a lottery deciding who he might select ahead of others. The assumption too is that we will play 4-4-2 against lower league opposition so that means that a holding midfielder such as Brian Stock could be out of contention for this clash. I am going to suggest the following line-up with some of the big guns still on the bench in case it doesn`t look to be working out!

Cisak, O’Neill, Shackell, Long, Lafferty, Wallace, Marney, Jones, Stanislas, Noble, Ings

Subs: Heaton, Trippier, Edgar, Stock, Arfield, Treacy, Vokes

Ref Watch:

The man in charge of this one is Tony Harrington. The Cleveland referee has been predominantly in charge of League One and League Two matches. . In 24 games last season, he sent off six players (1-in-4 games!) and another 57 saw yellow. This is the first time he will have been involved in a Clarets game.

Match Prediction:

The Clarets should be too strong for the Minstermen and I will go with a 3-1 win for Burnley.

Next Match:

The Championship campaign returns this Saturday with our first league away game of the season and we stay in Yorkshire. We travel to Hillsborough on Saturday 10th August to play Sheffield Wednesday (Kick-Off: 3pm)
