Steven Caldwell was sent-off after being given a straight red in stoppage time against West Ham at Upton Park last Saturday. As we entered 5 minutes of added time and with the score at 5-2 to West Ham Caldwell cynically pulled back Hines earning himself the red card. Hines may well have made it 6-2 were it not for the foul but would that have made much difference? Some fans who had already given up on this game would have preferred Caldwell to be available for the Pompey match although at the end of the day goal difference could be an important factor that decides whether we stay up or not at the end of the season. In the end the game finished 5-3 after a late Eagles goal; a goal that prevented Blackburn going above us so it wasn’t all bad news!

The captain now receives an automatic one-match ban and will therfore be suspended for our next game against Portsmouth at Fratton Park this Saturday.

The loss of our captain will be a blow but at least Owen Coyle has a number of options in the back-four for the Pompey clash.

These options would appear to be

1.Jordan in centre, Kalvenes at left back

2.Bikey back to central defence, Joey Gudjonsson or Kevin McDonald in midfield.

3.Duff in centre

4.Edgar in centre.

What do you reckon? Comment on your preferred option below this article or in our forums.
