Speculation is rife that Burnley were looking for another defender, even before the shock announcement yesterday that we had sold left-back, Danny Fox to Southampton for a reported £1.8 million.

The defender we targeted would appear to be Stoke’s 22 year old, Ryan Shotton and no doubt our attempts to bring the player to Turf Moor will now intensify since we are now light again in the back four. There is some talk of a seven figure fee involved but if the rumour is true we also face competition from Championship rivals Ipswich and Derby for his signature.

Do we have a problem now at left-back? Yes true, we do have Brian Easton and he must secretly be licking his lips now at the opportunity he has been given following Fox’s departure. Ben Mee too can also play in that position but if anything happens injury or suspension wise to one or both of them then our options will be limited.

So what do we know about Shotton?

Shotton is a local Staffordhire lad, born in Fenton and he came through Stoke’s youth ranks before signing his first professional contract for them in 2007.

A number of loan spells followed including Altrincham (2007-8), Tranmere Rovers (2008-9) and finally Barnsley (2009-10). He signed a two year contract extension for Stoke in September 2010 keeping him at the Britannia Stadium until 2013.

Shotton has made just 8 appearances for Stoke but does seem a versatile player. He can play anywhere across the back four and even on one occasion came on as an emergency forward and actually scored a goal in a 1-0 win over Hajduk Split in a UEFA Europa League game.
