Owen Coyle still wants to sign Middlesbrough right-back Tony McMahon according to media reports today.

McMahon is believed to have turned down a move to the Clarets earlier this month, but it is understood Owen Coyle is trying again for the defender and is still in talks with the club.

The reports also suggest Coyle hopes to land McMahon before Saturday`s promotion clash with local rivals, Preston.

McMahon has been unable to retain a regular place in Gareth Southgate’s team and being out of contract in the summer he would be able to leave Boro on a free transfer at the end of the season It is thought cash-strapped Burnley are trying to sign him earlier for a modest fee in the January window.

The 22 year old signed for Middlebrough in 2004 and they have been his only professional club to date although he has had loan spells at both Blackpool and recently Sheffield Wednesday.

He was an Owl for most of this season making 20 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday on loan before returning to Middlesbrough in October. He has just made his first appearance of the 2008-09 season for Middlesbrough in a match against Arsenal last month.

He was captain of the Middlesbrough side that won the FA Youth Cup during the 2003-04 season. He has also represented England at under-17 and under-18 level.
