The Clarets have once more been linked with a move for Rochdale’s unsettled 20-year-old centre half, Craig Dawson.

We could however face competition for his signature from Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Ipswich.

Rochdale turned down an offer of £400,000 from Middlesbrough in May 2010 and are understood to rate the defender to be worth at least £1 million.

Dawson is clearly looking for a better challenge and has twice handed in transfer requests, both turned down by the club.

Rochdale fans though believe Dawson could be about to leave Spotland after not featuring in a recent friendly against Bradford although the official club line is that he was ‘rested’

It is understood Boro might be willing to double their offer whilst Ipswich could even be prepared to make a a £1 million bid thus meeting Rochdale’s asking price.

Burnley however are thought to be in the driving seat if the rumours are true since it is understood Dawson would prefer to stay in the North West.

After a spell on Manchester City’s books as a youth player, the locally born Rochdale lad started his career with Unibond League side Radcliffe Borough after signing for them in the middle of the 2007-08 season.

He signed for Rochdale in March 2009 although for a time played on loan for his former club before eventually making his debut for Rochdale away to Port Vale in August 2009. Dawson has therefore in his first season helped Rochdale secure their first promotion since 1969!
