Port Vale striker, Leon Constantine recently told local rag ‘The Sentinel’ that he was leaving Port Vale at the end of the season because of the abuse he has suffered from the fans
‘I’d be lying if I said the abuse hadn’t influenced my decision.’
‘I have put in a lot of work here. I am a team player and have defended and cleared numerous headers and tracked back.’
‘I will just go where I am wanted.’
‘I have never been at a club where I have scored goals and heard the crowd boo, so I am leaving them in the past.’
‘I don’t know whether it is a minority or the majority of fan’s, but if it was a minority you wouldn’t hear it.’
‘People think I am lazy, but I cover a lot of ground, a lot more than other forwards in this league. I also score a lot of goals.’
So what you might be asking?
Well it would appear that at least one Sunday paper (The People) is now suggesting that the Clarets are interested in bringing the prolofic goal scorer to Turf Moor.
Constantine is out of contract this summer so a free transfer might be on the cards.
The 29 year old was born in Hackney, London and played for Edgware Town before joining Millwall in September 2000.
Following loan spells with Leyton Orient and Partick Thistle, he moved to Brentford on a free transfer in August 2002. In August 2003 he then joined Southend United, initially on non-contract terms.
He did not accept a new contract with Southend and instead joined Peterborough United in May 2004. In October 2004, he joined Torquay United on loan and later that year in December 2004 moved to Torquay for a club record fee of £75,000.
Constantine then joined his current club, Port Vale in November 2005 before signing permanently after a loan spell.
He looked set to move to Barnsley in the transfer window earlier this year. Port Vale even agreed a fee of £200,000 plus Marc Richards. However, the deal fell through because neither player could agree terms. Richards however has now agreed terms with Port Vale, signing for the club this week so maybe Barnsley’s interest in Constantine could be resurrected.
Let’s hope this time, the papers havent made a mistake confusing Burnley with Barnsley. It is understood a number of clubs are showing interest in the striker though. Probably not surprising in view of his strike rate of 32 goals in 72 league appearances for Port Vale.
Well if we do get the player, the fans better make sure they dont boo him!
