According to the Daily Mirror, Sunderland striker Connor Wickham is set to sign for Burnley on loan after missing out on a move to rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Rovers of course increased their armoury in the striking department after forking out a reported £8 million for Huddersfield forward, Jordan Rhodes in the summer transfer window last month. It would appear that signing dashed any hopes that Connor Wickham could also follow suit and become a Rovers player on a loan basis.

It is no secret that Eddie Howe is looking to sign another striker and many Clarets fans were perhaps surprised that no such signing permanent or otherwise took place before the transfer window closed last Friday. The loan transfer window now opens this Friday so perhaps Howe is hanging fire with an eye out for a decent loan striker.

Could that striker be Connor Wickham? He would certainly be high profile although has not exactly set the world alight for the Black Cats since arriving from Ipswich in June 2011. Wickham signed a four year deal with Premier League club Sunderland for a club record fee of £8 million but has managed just 16 appearances and one goal since arriving. The 19 year old England Under 21 international came through Reading and Ipswich’s youth systems before making his name in the first team at Portman Road. He notched up 13 goals in 65 appearances for the Tractor Boys before Premier League clubs started to eye the young, raw talent.

Could Wickham be just the striker we need? Certainly high-profile but its a worry that his goal-scoring seems to have dried up.
