Burnley gaffer,Brian Laws has appointed former Southampton manager, 49 year old,Stuart Gray as first team coach adding to the recent backroom staff appointments.

Stuart Gray was a left back in his playing days although could also play in midfield. His first professional club was Nottingham Forest and he also played for Barnsley, Aston Villa and Southampton during his career hanging up his boots in 1993.

Gray then joined the Saints coaching staff at The Dell before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 1994 as reserve team coach. Unable to settle in the West Midlands he returned to Southampton eventually becoming reserve team coach under Dave Jones in July 1997. A promotion to first team coach in November 1998 followed and after Jones left, he kept that position following the appointment of new manager Glen Hoddle in January 2000. Hoddle left the club for Spurs in March 2001 and Gray took over as caretaker manager before taking on the role permanently in June 2001 with Southampton now also moving to their new stadium at St Marys. Results though were not good for the Saints and Gray parted company just over three months later after being sacked by Saints chairman, Rupert Lowe.

His managerial career after that was more successful. He was joint caretaker manager with John Deehan at Aston Villa after the departure of John Gregory in 2002 and then had a short spell as assistant caretaker manager at Crystal Palace to Kit Symons. He was then reunited with Dave Jones who was now manager at Wolverhampton Wanderers returning to the West Midlands to take up the role of assistant manager. After Jones left the club he was reunited with another manager, this time Glen Hoddle and he kept his position until it was Hoddle`s turn to leave Molineux. Gray took over as caretaker manager at Molineux before taking up the role of manager at Northampton Town in January 2007 after accepting a 2 and a half year contract.

However Northampton struggled and were relegated from League 1 at the end of the 2008-9 season. The early results at the start of the 2009-10 season in League 2 were mediocre with the club in 16th spot after the first six games. In September 2009 Gray was sacked and had been out of the football limelight until now.

The new managerial team now reads as follows:

Manager: Brian Laws

Assistant Manager: Russ Wilcox

First Team Coach: Stuart Gray

Goalkeeping Coach: Billy Mercer

Player/Coach: Graham Alexander

Fitness Coach: Dr Tom Little

Chief Scout: Tim Henderson.
