The Clarets have signed Scottish international striker Steven Thompson from Cardiff City. Opportunities were going to be limited with Jay Bothroyd, Ross McCormack and Eddie Johnson having signed for the Bluebirds and the 29-year old had therefore been transfer-listed by Cardiff gaffer, Dave Jones.

Thompson has signed a two-year deal with the Clarets after arriving on a free transfer.

He started his career at Dundee United before joining Rangers on Boxing Day in 2003, for £200,000 .Thompson moved to Cardiff City for a fee of £250,000 in January 2006

The 6ft 2 striker scored 16 goals in 97 games during his time with Cardiff City

So we have yet another Scot in the team, he was born in Paisley and has played 16 times for his country.

Most Clarets will be delighted with this news. It was clear that we needed more options up front with Paterson run ragged in a number of games and not really a target man.

Let’s hope the extra strike power can now kick-start our season and move us up quickly from the relegation zone.

So that’s it then until January, the transfer window is now closed although emergency loans still remain an option. Let’s be thankful we did at least manage to sign one new striker before the deadline and give the Clarets fans some hope after such a disappointing start to the season.

He has been given the Number 30 shirt
