Ashley Barnes has been talking up the impact that he believes Jon Walters will have this season following his arrival from Stoke City.

Speaking to the Official Site following the friendly against Shamrock Rovers at the weekend where Walters opened his Burnley account, Barnes explained that he felt the Republic of Ireland international would add some extra ‘know how’ as we go into our second successive Premier League campaign in 2017/18.

Of course for Barnes it means added competition in the frontline with how things stand in the first team squad but he welcomes that knowing his experience of the top flight could be telling over the next 12 months.

‘I think Jon is a great addition. He`s what we need and he`s a good guy. After losing Joey Barton – the experienced head you could say – now we`ve got Jon to settle the ship a bit along with the other older ones like Heats as well.’

With 33 year old Walters netting on his debut against Shamrock, Barnes went on to say that with the four nil victory he felt it was the perfect way to top off the week we’d had in Ireland.

He was pretty happy about his own strike on the day as well.

‘I think he (Dyche) was surprised how well the lads came back after the summer. We had the break and we have all treated it well and I think he is quite happy with that. It`s been a tough week and it was nice to cap it off.’

He added.

‘It`s always a nice feeling when the ball hits the back of the net after the running you`ve been doing during the week. You want to win but the main thing for all of us has been the fitness work. Throughout pre-season that`s the main aim. We`ve got another tough game next week and then the games come thick and fast and before you know it, it will be the big game against Chelsea.’
