Burnley’s bid for that illusive away win in the Premier League will see the latest opportunity to secure it come at relegation threatened Sunderland on Saturday.

Stephen Ward knows Sunderland – where he once had a trial – have to win this game at the Stadium of Light so will adopt a ‘must win’ mentality against Burnley, which is something Ward’s looking for the Clarets to match.

He told the Official Website.

‘They will be well up for the game and have probably earmarked this one as a game they need to win to give themselves a good chance. We need to go with that mentality as well. We performed very well up there in the FA Cup game and I feel if we an go with the same attitude, mentality and performance level we had at Anfield last Sunday, we will give ourselves a really good chance of picking up something from the game.’

Having failed to secure a maximum return for a while Ward knows Burnley need to get back to winning ways as we look to ensure we’ll stay clear of the relegation dog fight.

Republic of Ireland international Ward continued.

‘We have 10 big games left. We will take every game one at a time but you want to get that next win as soon as possible. We have lost a couple on the bounce now and had a couple of draws, so we need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible and hopefully we can do that this Saturday.’

The recent form shown from Burnley isn’t brilliant but with Sunderland failing to win since December – meaning they are six points adrift of safety – it could be a lot worse so we wouldn’t swap positions!

A first away win season would not only put Burnley another step closer to Premier League safety it would see the Clarets – who also beat Sunderland in an FA Cup third round replay at Turf Moor – complete the double over the Black Cats having won the reverse fixture 4-1 on New Years Eve.
