Steve Cotterill, following the long awaited return of our top goal scorer, Andy Gray in the match against QPR yesterday, had a few comments to make about his role in the team.

‘Andy is not quite there yet, but it was a psychological thing, not only for the player but for the rest of the squad to see and feel him out there.

‘He will get better and we know that. But at the moment it was just not quite enough.

‘We haven’t won since we lost Andy and people say one man doesn’t make a team.

‘I would like to change that statement because I think one man does make a team.

‘If you look back to all the great sides would Argentina have won the World Cup without Maradona? I’m not so sure.

Look at Chelsea without John Terry. With him they are rock solid and the king of clean sheets, and without him they struggle.

‘One man does make a team and we have missed Andy for a long time.’

These are very fair points from Steve and at the moment it seems he just cant win as fans seem to be accusing him more and more of making up excuses to explain this bad run of form.

I wish fans would just simply realise that the problem we have is confidence at the moment leading to individual errors. It seems however that the knee-jerk and panic reaction from some fans make them determined to condemn Steve for poor tactics. Give the man a break, not so long ago we were applauding Steve for keeping this team that ‘punches above it’s weight’ in the Top 6. We were also cheering him on after the ‘Manager of the Month’ award he received not so long ago, during the time Andy Gray was knocking goals in for fun!

On the Andy Gray issue, when Steve is honest and does admit we are a one man team and gives his reasons as stated above, he is then accused of making up excuses! When he doesn’t reveal his thoughts, he’s accused of not being honest!

Just cant win poor chap can he?

Personally I dont care if we are a one-man band or not if it means Andy Gray starts banging them in for fun again returning us into the Play-Offs places.

Last season we were accused of being a one man team relying on Ade Akinbiyi too much.

Maths was not one of my stronger subjects at school but since Ade has returned, by my abacus that means we are at least a two-man team!
