Brucie Bonus for Stan Ternent

Steve Bruce has brought in former Burnley manager, Stan Ternent for a scouting role at Sunderland.

This is not the first time the Black Cats gaffer has used the services of Ternent and he clearly rates his ability.

Bruce and Ternent also worked together at Birmingham City and at Wigan Athletic.

Ternent was of course born in Gateshead and is a childhood Sunderland fan so this will be an extra bonus for our former gaffer. He also returns to the club where he started his coaching career in football. After his playing days with Burnley and then Carlisle he joined Sunderland as a player but never made his debut due to injury. He eventually though became a coach there before taking up the role as Blackpool manager in 1979

Stan Ternent, now 63 has of course had an illustrious career in football management since and was gaffer at Burnley between 1998-2004 having previously managed Hull City and Bury as well as Blackpool. He was also assistant manager at Chelsea between 1991-1993 under Ian Porterfield and then David Webb.

After his emotional departure from Turf Moor at the end of the 2003-04 campaign, he became manager of struggling Gillingham.

Despite their heroic attempts to stay up Ternent could not prevent the club eventually being relegated from the Championship in May 2005 and he quit that month.

In November 2007, he was given a role at Derby County under their new manager Paul Jewell but left in April 2008 to take up the reins at Huddersfield Town in place of Andy Ritchie. It was not a success for Ternent and he was sacked six months later.

Every Clarets fan will now wish Stan all the best in his new role at Sunderland, who co-incidentally are the side we face next at Turf Moor this Saturday (September 19th)
