33 year old former Burnley defender, Clarke Carlisle whose contract at York City came to an end recently is now back premanently at Northampton following another loan spell at the club.

He was released by Burnley in May 2012 after the expiry of his contract having previously had loan spells at Preston and Northampton. Carlisle then signed for newly-promoted League Two side York City at the end of August 2012 on a contract lasting until January 2013 having previously turned down a contract offer from Northampton.

It would appear though that Carlisle had a change of heart rejoining the Cobblers on loan in November with a view to a permanent deal in the January window. That deal has now been completed and he will be at the Sixfields Stadium until at least the end of next season. Northampton gaffer, Aidy Boothroyd of course knows Carlisle well having been his boss previously at Watford and after working with him at another former club, Leeds United.

Talking about the deal, Boothroyd said:

‘I am delighted to have Clarke on board. He is the sort of player and the sort of person who inspires and improves others around him and I am delighted he will be spending the next 18 months with us.’
