Burnley X-Files: Dynamo release Akinbiyi

Houston Dynamo have today announced Ade Akinbiyi’s release to make room on their roster for a new signing, 24 year old Mexican national, Luis Angel Landin. Landin is now the club’s first ‘designated player’

The MLS created the designated player rule, (also known as the David Beckham rule) in 2007. The rule allows a team to sign one player but only count $400K of that player’s salary against the $2.4M salary cap.

Akinbiyi joined USA Major League Soccer club, Houston Dynamo in March 2009 after being released by Burnley.

Ade went on to make his MLS debut for Dynamo in May as a late substitute in a game against New England Revolution but since failed to break through into the team and hold down a regular spot. Akinbiyi saw few starts, most of them coming in non-league competitions. Most of his league appearances were as a late sub. His only goal for the Dynamo came in a non-league match (U.S. Open Cup) Ade saw his final action in the orange kit of Dynamo last night (Thursday 19th) in a CONCACAF Champions League match which saw the Dynamo beat Isidro Metapan of El Salvador 1-0 at home. About half of the starting lineup was reserves players, which included Ade who played around 60 minutes before making way for regular starting forward, Brian Ching (who later scored the match winner)

Akinbiyi’s future is now uncertain and at 34 he might now consider hanging up his boots.

It is such a shame his career at Dynamo has clearly not gone according to plan and whatever happens to Ade, all at Vital Burnley wish him well.
