Burnley will not see any football action for the next two weeks but a few of our players may well be playing for their country during the International break which is now upon us. One such player surprisingly could be Leon Cort who has been called up by Guyana.
Leon Cort`s days at Burnley look to be numbered and he certainly does not appear to be in Eddie Howe`s plans. The defender is currently on a season-long loan at Charlton and is expected to be released in the summer. The 32 year old has played just two matches for the Addicks since joining the London club at the end of August but it would seem that is enough games for Guyana to come calling and offer him a place in their squad for the next qualification stages of their 2014 World Cup campaign.
Cort, born in Southwark, London qualifies to play for Guyana due to his mother`s side of the family and he will now be jetting off to the Caribbean this week to possibly feature in two CONCACAF region World Cup qualifying games. Guyana face Barbados in Bridgetown on Friday 7th October (Kick-Off: 16:00 local time) and then follow that up with another away trip, this time to Bermuda who they play in Prospect on Tuesday 11th October (Kick-Off: 20:00 local time)
Guyana currently share the top spot of their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Group B table with Trinidad and Tobago after two games. Both countries have a maximum six points and the same goal difference of plus three with Guyana having scored a goal more. The other clubs in the group, Barbados and Bermuda have yet to pick up a point.
It will be interesting to see if Cort manages to pick up his first cap for his adopted country although should he officially become an international player, it probably won`t affect his future at Burnley FC.
Striker, Alex MacDonald is another player who will be on International duty after being called up for the Scotland`s Under-21s squad. He will join his team-mates for the Scots’ UEFA U21 Championship qualifying games away to Luxembourg in the Josy Barthel Stadium on Thursday, 6th October and the home clash against Austria at St Mirren Park on Monday, 10th October
Macca made his debut for the Scotland U21s in November last year, coming off the bench against Northern Ireland . He has yet to make a start or score for his country in the three games he has featured though so I am sure the 21 year old will be keen to rectify that as soon as possible.
Centre back, Kevin Long currently enjoying a loan spell at Accrington Stanley could be another player honoured by his country. The Republic of Ireland U21s play a UEFA U21 Championship qualifying game against Liechtenstein in Eschen on Tuesday 11th October. He is not in the current 16 man Irish squad but has been put on stand-by with two places still up for grabs! Long`s last call-up was in 2009 when he was a Cork City player but so far a debut has eluded him.
Canadian internationalDavid Edgar is another player who has now flown over the pond. Canada play St Lucia and Puerto Rico in their CONCACAF Group D World Cup Qualifying games over the international break and with Edgar named in the squad he will be hoping to add to his three caps so far.
