21 year old in-form Burnley striker Danny Ings has been called up to the England Under 21 squad. Ings has already scored 10 goals for the Clarets this season and is currently our leading goal scorer, helping the side progress to the top of the Championship table and the last sixteen of the Capital One Cup competition. His efforts have certainly not gone unnoticed by England Under 21 gaffer, Gareth Southgate.

Ings might have been expecting a bit of rest and recuperation with the international break upon us after Saturday’s home game against Reading but now instead he will be joining up with the rest of the England Under 21 squad next week in preparation for two crucial European U21 Championship qualifying games. The squad travels to San Marino on Thursday, October 10th before hosting Lithuania on Tuesday, October 15th at Ipswich Town`s Portman Road ground. They will be hoping to do will in both games and eventually qualify for the finals in the Czech Republic in 2015.

The last Burnley player to be honoured at this level by England was Jay Rodriquez. His first and only cap was achieved when he came on as a 60th minute substitute against Italy Under 21s in February 2011. Richard Chaplow and Chris Casper are the only other two Burnley players to play for England at this level in the club’s history so Ings will be hoping to play and become the fourth!
