After the disastrous performance and result at Turf Moor against Brighton on Saturday; our third successive league defeat of the new season you might have thought Eddie Howe would relish a break to try and get things back on track. His post-match interview suggested the complete opposite though
Speaking to the media, Howe said:
As always it (the international break) seems to have come at a bad time for us.
‘We lose a few players but that`s how it is.
‘It`s a long two weeks from my perspective, I want to play tomorrow.
‘That performance will live long in my memory now.
‘We`ve got a break which we didn`t really want now…”
Well we do have a break and we have a number of Clarets players who have been called up by their country.
Martin Paterson would have been one of them after being called up for Northern Ireland`s World Cup qualifying game away to Russia this Friday. Pato, who has been suffering from a minor hamstring injury recently played the whole of the second-half against Brighton after coming on from the bench but if Clarets fans thought his injury problems were now over they might have to think again! Paterson has now withdrawn from the squad to face Russia after agreeing with his country that he could pull out in order to continue his rehabilitation at Turf Moor as he tries to fully recover from the minor hamstring tear. His fitness will be assessed later this week and it remains a possibility that he could still link up with the Northern Ireland squad for their second World Cup qualifying match to be played at home to Luxembourg on Tuesday 11th September. Two further Burnley Northern Ireland internationals, Michael Duff and Danny Lafferty are also on stand-by.
Welsh international striker Sam Vokes has also been called up by his country for their World Cup qualifying games. Wales play Belgium on Friday in Cardiff and are then away to Serbia on Tuesday 11th September.
Canada too are also in World Cup qualifying action which means a call-up for defender,David Edgar. He has been added to Canadian coach, Stephen Hunt’s squad for their double-header against Panama on the 7th and 11th of September. Edgar flew out cross the pond to meet up with the squad following the Brighton game on Saturday.
Finally it`s still all go for young gun, Cameron Howieson. Having just recovered from a hectic international schedule as well as representing the New Zealand football team at the London 2012 Olympics, he finds he is now on stand-by for the Kiwi`s World Cup qualifying games. On the 7th September New Zealand line-up against New Caledonia in Noumea before travelling home to play the Solomon Islands in Auckland on the 11th.
