Alan Nixon is at it again increasing tensions ahead of the Bolton clash on Tuesday night by suggesting Burnley have locked horns with the Horwich-based club over compensation for the Judas saga.
We all know what happened in January this year after Owen ‘Judas’ Coyle jumped ship and took virtually the whole management team with him to the Reebok Stadium.
The disgraceful disloyalty shown by Coyle at the worst possible moment, most Clarets feel led ultimately to our relegation.
Poor Brian Laws was given the poisoned chalice as our new manager in the middle of a transfer window having to cope with an obviously demoralised club and set of players. In the end he could not avoid the drop but now he has a chance to redeem the situation and give all Clarets fans a tonic.
All we have to do is beat Bolton in the third round of the Carling Cup at Turf Moor on Tuesday night and send all the Bolton crew back through Traitor’s Gate to the Reebok empty handed.It would be good to wipe the smirks off their faces and then get loads of dosh for the mess they caused.
Let’s just remind ourselves who the dispicable lot were and realise the numbers involved. Owen Coyle of course was followed to the Reebok by his side-kick Sandy Stewart. John Henry, our former reserve team coach was bound to follow and did. You could have expected the Scottish contingent to stick together like glue but not content with that Coyle also took goalkeeping coach Phil Hughes and even Chief Scout, Cliff Roberts. He at least didn’t take the Burnley kit with him although he might have done so had he moved to West Ham or Aston Villa! Instead he took the kit manager, Tony McGrory.
In a sense it was good riddance to all of them but perhaps the one that really hurt the most was the loss of Steve Davis Thought to be Burnley through-and-through even he stuck two fingers up to the club and joined the Judas crew.
It is no secret that Alan Nixon is in the pocket of Owen Coyle but he does have this annoying habit of reporting the facts even though the wording of them are somewhat embellished with claptrap.
So if he says the two clubs are fighting over compensation, you can bet your bottom dollar they are.
It would appear they simply can’t agree a figure with relations not surprisingly being frosty as a consequence. I would certainly like to be a fly on the wall when this Mottley Crew return to Turf Moor on Tuesday night and experience the Boardroom Hospitality (Cough!)
Back in January, Alan Nixon wrote that a £1 million compensation package had been agreed for Coyle alone but it would appear life was not that simple. Burnley were reported to be holding out for £3 million compensation originally but appear to have got caught up in some legal wrangle that favoured Bolton.
Nixon wrote back then:
‘Owen Coyle can walk out on Burnley for nothing after legal advice from the managers` union – but he wants his old club to get a £1million compensation deal from Bolton in an extraordinary final gesture.
Coyle’s barrister – from the League Managers Association solicitors – has told him that he is within his rights to leave Turf Moor because the Clarets have ‘breached his contract’.
The LMA claim that Coyle was effectively sacked by Burnley when they called a press conference and discussed a move for a replacement while he was sitting at home and ‘suspended”
Writing for the People today he says:
‘Burnley and Bolton are caught up in a bitter compensation row as they head for a grudge Carling Cup meeting.
The Clarets still want a settlement for Owen Coyle`s backroom team who left with the manager last January and the two clubs are unable to agree to the claim figure.
Coyle took assistant Sandy Stewart and coach Steve Davis among others. None of them had signed contract at Turf Moor and left immediately.
Burnley are fighting for compensation and it will strain relations in the boardroom when the local rivals meet on Tuesday.’
You can say that again but as long as we stuff Bolton at Turf Moor on Tuesday night and then take them for all they got financially, I don’t give a fig!
