Eddie Howe has made just one summer signing so far with Ben Mee arriving from Manchester City on a season-long loan.

Clarets fans though will be heartened by news today that Eddie Howe is seeking to extend his squad numbers by three before the start of the new season.

It would appear also that he is seeking a new striker to replace Chris Iwelumo who signed for Watford yesterday and then proceeded to score on his debut for his new club.

Iwelumo helped his new team beat non-league Wealdstone 3-1 last night and was said to have an ‘outstanding game’! Let’s hope he doesn’t have one for Watford when they line up against us at Turf Moor in the season opener on Saturday 6th August.

Eddie Howe talking about the transfer said:

‘Chris is a great pro and he worked extremely hard for us. I couldn’t guarantee him first team football though, so he decided to move on and we wish him well,

‘We are working on it (a replacement) because we need another striker. I don’t want to go into the season with just three, so we will be working hard to bring one in.’

Talking about the lack of signings in general, Howe said:

‘In an ideal world we wanted to get the squad together for the first day of pre-season,

‘It hasn’t quite worked out like that and we are getting the squad together quite late, which always leaves a short time to prepare the team,

‘As I’ve said all along though, we don’t need a huge amount. But we do need two or three quality additions and hopefully we can get them in soon, because we want to integrate them with the players.’

Clarets fans of course have been speculating who our targets might now be but there are very few clues in the media with rumours and gossip almost drying up.

The Chris Iwelumo story he was leaving came from messageboard gossip on a Watford site initially and there was nothing in the media until the deal went through.

So do we now believe forums may have the answers? If you believe they do then we could be signing the following:

Keith Treacy from Preston in a player/cash deal with Leon Cort going in the opposite direction.

26 year old ex-Manchester United, Derby and Wolves midfielder, David Jones

Lloyd Dyer, Leicester’s 28 year old winger

How about Charlton’s Miguel Llera? Don’t think we would be in the market for a 31 year old centre back would we?

The daftest of the lot? We are about to sign Leeds United Luciano Becchio!! Yeah right

Oh well it’s all good fun as long as we do get three players in by 6th August!
