The Clarets manager has surprisingly been linked with a move to the south coast club to be Harry Redknapp’s assistant.
With current assistant Kevin Bond apparently on the Newcastle United wish list, Cotterill’s name has been linked with Pompey, but those claims would appear to be wide of the mark.
A Portsmouth source told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: ‘Harry and Steve have been friends for a long time, and they did meet up recently, but it seems highly unlikely that Cotterill will be coming to Fratton Park.
‘He is a well respected manager in his own right, and I can’t see him being attracted by an assistant’s job.’
Cotterill recently signed a long-term extension to his contract as Burnley manager, and a move does appear somewhat unlikely.
