Derby County gaffer, Nigel Clough is determined to hold onto 28-year-old Jason Shackell despite a reported £1.2million bid from Burnley for the defender. According to Sky Sports it is understood the bid was rejected.

It is thought a number of clubs have Shackell on their radar after impressing for the Rams this season.

‘We don’t have to sell,’ said Clough. ‘But if we do it will be to strengthen the team.’

The Clarets were linked with Shackell previously when the player was at Barnsley but he chose instead to join the Rams in June 2011 after agreeing a three-year deal.

With regular Derby skipper Shaun Barker out through injury towards the end of last season,Shackell was also given the captain’s armband.

Shackell started his professional career at Norwich City before joining Wolves in September 2008 after signing a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £1 million.

He returned to Norwich on loan for a spell and another loan out to Doncaster Rovers also followed. In May 2010 he signed for Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.

Shackell’s preferred position in the back four is in the centre of defence but he is also a pretty good left back.
