The Clarets along with Championship rivals Derby, Forest, Brighton, Leeds and Birmingham are reported to be in a tug-of-war for Sheffield United midfielder, Nick Montgomery.

The 30 year old has spent his entire professional career at Bramall Lane making over 350 appearances for the club.

He plays more as a defensive midfielder for the Blades.

In June 2010 he signed a new 3 year deal with the club after turning down Yorkshire rivals Leeds United, despite being a life long Leeds fan.

Montgomery although born in Leeds turned down an opportunity to play for England despite interest at the time from then manager, Sven Goran Erikson.

He decided instead to play for Scotland and indeed already has two Scotland Under 21 caps having also played for Scotland Futures against Poland in December 2005.

It would certainly be a cultural shock should the player move away from Bramall Lane and you have to ask whether Burnley are interested bearing in mind Eddie Howe’s statement recently that they are not seeking additional permanent signings in the January window. You also wonder if his age would also count against him with Howe trying to reduce the average age of the squad.

Nevertheless, he would certainly provide some experience in the squad and it is not the first time we have been linked with the player although it has to be said not under Eddie Howe.
