The summer transfer window will close at 11:00 pm on Monday, 1 September, that is tomorrow! If Burnley want to supplement their squad, time is running out but the platitudes and excuses are still continuing. Reports suggest about three players could be on the cards to arrive at Turf Moor in a hectic day`s trading tomorrow but how much of that can we believe and who will they be? There were also reports ahead of the Manchester United game that Dyche was hoping to bring in a player ahead of that clash but nothing happened so did something once again fall through?
It is clear Burnley want to strengthen the squad particularly in midfield and central defence and it is equally clear that we need to but most of our attempts to sign our linked targets appear to have stalled or fallen by the wayside. The excuses that Burnley are being priced out by the market is now commonly heard as one by one our targets become out of our reach! In most cases we seem to be talking about £7-£8 million being a problem. Burnley are on record as saying £8 million could not be found to try and bring Watford striker, Troy Deeney to Turf Moor. Mind you even that might not have been enough considering clubs such as Hull City and Leicester who were prepared it seems to have paid such money have also been snubbed. Deeney last week ended speculation about his future and signed a new four-year deal at Vicarage Road!
Another target that seems to have run into similar problems is Wigan midfielder, James McArthur. The Clarets put in a bid of £4 million according to the media but that was snubbed out of hand. Some reports suggest four bids by Burnley in total were in fact rejected presumably because they didn`t meet the club`s valuation. During last week it looked almost certain he would be joining Leicester for £7 million, a price tag which once again according to local media reports would be out of Burnley`s reach. The deal at the King Power Stadium though also appears to have fallen through too despite suggestions a medical was underway. According to the Daily Mail, the deal was scuppered over the proposed payment structure. Clarets fans hoping that could re-open the door for Burnley look set to be disappointed. The suggestions are that Crystal Palace are now in pole position to get their hands on the 26 year old after new gaffer, Neil Warnock entered the race to sign him last week and it looks like £7 million is no barrier to them either. Aston Villa too might also be keeping a check a on the situation but it looks like Burnley are set to lose out to a team likely to be competing with the Clarets to avoid the drop this season.
With Henri Lansbury, another midfield target having now sorted out a new deal at Nottingham Forest the options appear to be running out. The Daily Mail however yesterday reported that Burnley we now chasing 28 year old midfielder and winger, George Boyd. The Scotland international looks set to drop down the pecking order at the KC Stadium with reports that Hull are in the market for new midfielders. According to the media Hull have made bids for both Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley and West Ham`s Mohamed Diame. Boyd might think his chances of playing for Hull could be limited this season and could therefore be keen to move to another Premier League club. He has one year left on his contract to run and reports suggest that £3 million might be enough to seal a move to Turf Moor. Boyd started his career with Stevenage Borough in 2001 having come through Charlton Athletic’s youth system before being released. He signed for Peterborough in January 2007 for a record Football Conference transfer fee of £260,000 and made over 260 appearances for the club. Whilst on the books at Posh he also had loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Hull City. Boyd joined Championship side Hull City on loan in Febraury 2013 until the end of that season, with a view to a permanent move and that move was sealed in May 2013 after Boyd agreed a two-year deal.
