Reports appeared in the Daily Mail and Daily Express yesterday that Burnley had signed 22 year old Welsh international striker, Sam Vokes on loan from Wolves. Eddie Howe of course certainly knows about the player`s talents having been his boss at Bournemouth. Vokes left Dean Court and signed for Wolves in May 2008 after agreeing a four-year deal but has had to play second fiddle at Molineux since that time only playing 47 times for the club and scoring 6 goals. A succession of loan spells followed at Leeds, Bristol City, Sheffield United and Norwich City.
Vokes is now apparently already at Turf Moor on loan according to some media reports but as yet there has been no official announcement by the club.
The big question on everybody`s lips of course is why would we want another striker with both Paterson and Ings on the steady road to recovery and expected to be available again in the New Year. Austin, Rodriguez, Hines, MacDonald and Fletcher are also of course recognised strikers in our squad too so that would make eight in total if Vokes comes on board.
One fear could be they are resigned to losing Rodriguez in the January window and are bringing Vokes in as a contingency but whatever the reason if true, Clarets fans are also questioning why we are focussing on our attack in the loan market and not it would seem on defence. The defence is crying out for improvement and yet Howe has singularly failed to find any suitable defenders on loan to bring in.
If the rumour is true that we have signed Vokes on loan it would also appear we have beaten both Championship rivals Southampton and Doncaster to his signature. Both were reported in the Mirror to be interested in a loan move for Vokes.
