What Chance Burnley Business before Window Closes?

The January transfer window which opened in England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday, 3 January is soon coming to an end and will close this Monday, 2 February at 11pm. There has been plenty of speculation surrounding potential Burnley interest in signing new players but so far the only bit of business that has been completed is the permanent signature of former Manchester United defender, Michael Keane.

Of course the biggest concern for Burnley fans was whether we could hold onto Danny Ings and I think we can now safely assume he will be a Clarets player for at least the rest of this season before his contract expires in the summer. Co-chairman, Mike Garlick announced a few weeks ago now he was 100% certain Ings would still be on our books come February 2nd and that has been echoed by the manager and player alike. Burnley Football Club were even forced to put out an official statement this week following media speculation that Liverpool was about to launch a bid and loan the player back to the club for the rest of the season. Chief Executive Lee Hoos poured cold water on speculation and having checked with the Premier League even said that such a loan move would be illegal under rule V7! You can read more about this in our article currently on the front page entitled ‘Hoos Saying Ings Staying? Lee is!!`. I think though the following paragraph from Hoos statement finally puts this issue to bed:

‘Over the course of the window, the player himself, Sean Dyche and the chairman have made it clear he won`t be going anywhere and we consider that the end of the matter.’ Even so as well as Liverpool the media still want to stoke the fire continually linking the player with a move to Spurs and Manchester City amongst other Premier League and Continental European clubs. Even today a rumour has broke that according to the Mirror, Manchester City are prepared to offer Edin Dzeko as part of an amazing Ings swap deal! It would be amazing but it isn`t going to happen so back off Mr Media!!

What about other players potentially leaving the club? It all seems to have been pretty quiet on that score to be honest although moves for strikers Lukas Jutkiewicz and Marvin Sordell have been mooted and these have normally been loan moves as part of a swap deal for other strikers. Last week though it was reported that Championship side, Wigan Athletic would be interested in loaning Lukas Jutkiewicz. The Latics made an offer of £1 million to Middlesbrough for Jutkiewicz during the summer, but he snubbed the Latics for the Premier League and signed for the Clarets. Although he has been sidelined with a foot injury recently he has found it hard to establish himself in the starting eleven and has yet to score for the Clarets in a Premier League game. There is no recent speculation on such a move so we shall have to see what happens before 11pm tomorrow but I don`t think Sean Dyche will be keen to let any of his tight squad go out on loan at this stage.
What about potential new players coming in? Well they certainly seem to have targets in mind but whether any transfer deadline day new faces arrive it remains to be seen.

One player that now appears to be definitely out of the running is Dundee United midfielder Stuart Armstrong. Sean Dyche has confirmed that the club has had a bid rejected for the 22 year old. Dyche said: “Different offers have been in for players. One`s been rejected today. He was more of a development style player in our world – a good young player we think could learn with us.” Celtic too are understood to have put in a bid with media reports suggesting it was about £1.5 million. That too has been rejected with the Tannadice club expecting far more for his services. Dyche has stated too that they are unlikely to now pursue the player so that one looks dead in the water.

Another of our reported targets was West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans. Championship club, Fulham are now also thought to be interested in the 27 year old Scotland international but once again this appears to have gone quiet as far as Burnley are concerned.

There have been a number of other somewhat tenuous links but none of them seem to carry any merit and it looks like Clarets fans will once again have to sit through Sky Sports coverage of Transfer Deadline Day to see what actually happens if anything.

All we can say is that the following players will definitely not be coming to Burnley despite links during the past few weeks. The reason being is that they have already found new clubs during the January transfer window as follows:

Jack Cork [Southampton – Swansea] Undisclosed
Shola Ameobi [Gaziantep – Crystal Palace] Free
Callum McManaman [Wigan – West Brom] around £4.75m
Joel Campbell [Arsenal – Villarreal] Loan
Shaun Maloney [Wigan – Chicago Fire] Undisclosed
Will Keane [Manchester United – Sheffield Wednesday] Loan
Jozy Altidore [Sunderland – Toronto] Undisclosed
