One of the downsides of being relegated should that be our fate at the end of the season, is that a number of our key players could get restless and be tempted to return to the Premier League in order to further their careers.

One such player might be Chris Eagles who recently said:

‘I’m still really ambitious – I want to play in the Champions League and for England. To do that I’d need to be in the Premier League so if Burnley went down I’d have to think seriously.

‘I couldn’t go back down into the Championship at this stage in my career and I know there would be offers.’

Those offers could well be from Everton and Spurs. The Toffees gaffer, David Moyes is known to be a fan of Eagles and has been linked to him a number of times previously including in the 2009 Summer transfer window.

Speculation today though links him with a move to Tottenham Hotspur; a club he supported as a child. According to the People, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been impressed by Eagles’ versatility in midfield and his ability to play on both wings.

If the rumour is true and if we are sadly relegated, Chris Eagles last game for the Clarets may well be against the team he could well join in the summer. Our last game of the season is of course against Spurs at Turf Moor on Sunday 9th May.

Let us all hope by then, that we are already safe from the drop and can hold onto Eagles.

Chris Eagles signed for the Clarets from Manchester United in the summer of 2008 for a fee understood to be about £1.5 million and his current contract does not run out until the end of the 2010/11 season. Eagles is a fans favourite although at times can be inconsistent. He has not maybe taken the Premier League by storm this season as much as he might have hoped for but nevertheless is a valuable member of the squad. He has in fact been an ever present in the eighteen this season but made only 19 starts in the League scoring just the one goal.
