The festive period didn’t start well (to put it mildly) for Burnley with a three-nil defeat at Hull suffered on Boxing Day, which was a game Sean Dyche admitted had been ‘a tough one to take.’

He told the Official Website.

‘We just didn’t change the tempo enough today. We played at a pace that was adaptable for the opposition and we don’t normally do that. That, in turn causes trouble and chances in the top end and that’s the madness of it. Last week, against Charlton, it could have been seven or either, but today we didn’t create anywhere near the chances. We all know they are tough here. Hull have only been beaten once here this season, so you now there’s a challenge there. It’s just a tough one to take and we don’t enjoy that.’

Dyche was looking forward to getting back in action so soon after, more so with that next game being at Turf Moor on Monday.

The response Burnley gave to the thrashing at Hull couldn’t have been much better with the year ending with a comprehensive (in the end) four-nil win over Bristol City thanks in part to Andre Gray’s hat-trick, against a side that had been heavily linked with him before he became a club record signing for the Clarets.

Dyche told the Official Website.

‘I think the fans enjoyed the energy, the goals, belief and all the trademarks that we like to think are a part of Burnley. The quality of the play was excellent and that’s six points in the last three games and that’s two points a game. You can only ask for your team to deliver that kind of level because you know, over a season, if you are around that mark you have had a good season.’

Gray had a really good chance against Hull on Boxing Day, which had he taken could have made all the difference at the KC Stadium, but it wasn’t to be on that occasion.

On Monday it was with it all going well for him, and Burnley, with Dyche finishing by praising him.

‘It was a really good response today from Andre because I felt he was quiet at Hull and it didn’t quite work out for him. Today, he was electric and his finishes were superb. I must also say I thought Sam Vokes today was outstanding, along a number of players.’
