Burnley left back Joseph Mills has today joined League One side Oldham Athletic on a 28-day loan. He could make his debut for the Latics in their away game at Peterborough United tomorrow.

Talking about the move Sean Dyche said:

‘We feel that Joe needs some games. Danny Lafferty is in control of the shirt at the minute and with Ben Mee coming back it gives us another option.

“We`ve got to have players who are fit and ready to come into the side if needs be but with three left backs we felt Joe was one that could go out.

“It`s a similar thing to the Marvin Bartley situation as he`d been injured in pre-season, he needs the games and we`re well stocked for midfielders.

“There are a number of reasons for it but the main one is get Joseph properly fit with first-team games at League One level so he`s available for us.”

Mills you could argue is only a Clarets player by default with his loan contract from Reading last season including a clause that required Burnley to sign him permanently this summer. Eddie Howe may well have been happy to do so, but Mills does not seem to have impressed Dyche.

The 23 year old arrived at Turf Moor on a season-long loan from Reading in the summer of 2012 but he made just 12 appearances last season hardly featuring at all once Sean Dyche took over as gaffer from Eddie Howe. The loan automatically became a permanent two-year deal this summer giving Dyche no option but to accept him into the squad. He has not featured at all in any of the opening games of the new season so a loan move is not totally unexpected.
