The Clarets could be intending to bring Peter Whittingham back to Turf Moor but this time on a permanent basis if speculation in the Sun today is true.

The paper states that Burnley have bid £1.75 million for their former loan player who now plays for Cardiff City.

The central midfielder who can also play out on the wing scored 25 goals last season for the Bluebirds helping them reach the Championship play-off final at Wembley where they were defeated by Blackpool.

Steve Cotterill signed Whittingham on loan back in 2005 when the player was on Aston Villa’s books. He played just seven games for the Clarets but failed to make a big impression.

How times have changed!

In January 2007 Villa decided to release the player and he was transferred to Cardiff City for a reported fee of £350,000.

Since that time he has looked very impressive scoring 32 goals in about 130 appearances for the Welsh club.

Now 25, Whittingham is also a former England Under 21 International.
