If you believe the Irish media, Burnley are lining up a loan move for 20 year old Ireland U21 Everton centre back Shane Duffy.

The Derry-born defender has been unable to become a regular in the Everton first team this season and it is believed, Toffees gaffer, David Moyes could be prepared to send Duffy out on loan.

Duffy had a brief spell on loan at Turf Moor in March 2011 on an initial 28-day loan with the possibility of an extension until the end of the 2010-11 season. He made his debut for the Clarets in April 2011 in the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town, playing the full 90 minutes but that was his only appearance.

The following season Duffy joined Scunthorpe on loan in September 2011 making a total of 19 appearances for the Iron before the Toffees recalled him in January 2012, due to an injury to Phil Jagielka. Duffy duly made his Premier League debut for Everton at White Hart Lane in January 2012, coming on as a substitute for the final 30 minutes but has only made a handful of first-team appearances since joining the club as a youth player from local Derry club, Foyle Harps in November 2008.

The Clarets are desperate to tighten up their defence, having now leaked the most goals in the Championship. They have conceded 22 goals and yet paradoxically have also scored 21 goals the highest in the division thanks mainly to the highest scorer in the country at the moment, Charlie Austin who has netted 15 so far this season. Is Duffy a good enough candidate to tighten up the defence? We will let our posters comment on that but one thing is certain it is becoming vitally important we hold onto Austin in the January window. A number of Premier League clubs are now rumoured to be sniffing about including Reading,Fulham and West Brom.
