The Clarets currently have three keepers on their books, Brian Jensen, Diego Penny and Jonathan Lund. It is perhaps surprising to learn therefore that we could be interested in another one with news that Burnley had Lincoln’s keeper, Robert Burch watched last night in their League 2 game against Rotherham at the Don Valley Stadium.
Lincoln City lost 2-0 but the Vital Lincoln editor,Neil Gentleman Hobbs assures us that Burch played well between the sticks making three excellent saves to keep the Imps in the game.
Burnley were apparantly one of four clubs represented at the match last night with Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Doncaster Rovers also present and showing an interest.
Rob Burch has a contract at Lincoln up to the end of the season although it is thought he is keen to sign a lucrative extension in the January window.
The 25 year old keeper spent five years at Spurs between 2002-2007 but spent most of that time out on loan. He had loan spells during this time at Woking, Stevenage Borough (2 stints), West Ham, Bristol City and Barnet only making a total of about 15 appearances without ever making his Spurs debut.
Spurs released him from his contract in May 2007 and he signed for Sheffield Wednesday in July of that year. Once more he struggled to make any impact playing just three competetive games for the Owls before signing for Lincoln City in June 2008 after being released from his contract.
He is now the regular first choice keeper for the Imps and has played well over 65 games for them since his transfer.
Our interest if true does indeed seem strange and could suggest all is not well in the goalkeeping department. It is hard to believe we would want four keepers on our books and with Lund just arriving earlier in the season, more doubts could be cast on Diego Penny. Penny though did play well the last time he featured for the Clarets first team against Wigan at Turf Moor last month when he came on after 15 minutes to replace the injured Jensen. He had earlier that month also saved a retaken penalty twice in a reserve game against Manchester City and was given great plaudits by Steve Davis for his impressive performance.
Owen Coyle though preferred to play Jensen in the next first team game against Hull despite the Beast having to have an injection to relieve the ankle pain and swelling in his foot. The Beast has kept his place since.
Oh well we shall have to see if there is any truth in this rumour and indeed if we were represented at the Rotherham v Lincoln game whether we were actually watching Burch and not an outfield player from one of the teams.
